Getting Your Boat Ready for Summer: Expert Tips from Pilot Knob Marina

Note: This article was originally published in the May, 2025 issue of Lake George Living.
As the ice melts and the days grow longer, it’s time to start thinking about getting your boat back in the water.
Summer is just around the corner! A little preparation now can save you time, money, and headaches
once summer is in full swing. At Pilot Knob Marina, we’ve seen it all, and we recommend these steps
to ensure your boat is in peak condition for a great 2025 season!
Summer Boat Prep Tips
Now, there are the DIYers and the ones who have a marina take care of everything and just have the
boat delivered to their dock, which we proudly offer! For the DIYers, start by giving your boat a thorough
inspection. Over the winter, systems can deteriorate or develop issues that aren’t immediately visible.
Check your engine, change the engine oil, replace fuel filters, and top off coolant levels, look for signs
of rodent damage, electrical connections, and the fuel system in general for signs of wear or corrosion.
Pay special attention to hoses, clamps, and belts, which can crack or loosen during colder months.
Replacing these small parts where there are signs of wear before they fail can prevent major issues later!
Plus, no one likes the boat to break down in season.
Test the Battery
Your boat’s battery is another critical component to inspect. Test its charge and clean any corrosion from
the terminals. If your battery has been stored inside, ensure it’s properly reinstalled before launching.
Battery failure on the first summer outing is a common frustration, but one that’s easy to avoid.
We do recommend taking a battery testing unit to ensure that it can hold a charge.
Stay Fluid
Even for those enrolled in a marina’s service program, we do recommend an examination of fluids.
A quick open of the engine compartment to ensure there are no leaks from delivery to your dock
and that levels are adequate. It never hurts to check!
Don't Forget the Hull
Don’t overlook your boat’s hull! It should be cleaned thoroughly to remove any grime and buildup.
Inspect for any imperfections or ask your marina to in order assure there are no stress cracks or blisters
for fiberglass boats. A good coat of wax is also essential for keeping your boat in great shape
for the whole season. For wood boats, checking the varnish for imperfections, and for any signs
of rot is very important.
Safety Equipment Matters
Beyond the boat itself, safety equipment is just as important as your mechanical systems.
Inspect your life jackets, ensuring they’re in good condition and that you have enough for every passenger.
Check your fire extinguisher, flares, and other emergency gear to make sure everything is present,
functional, and not expired.
Review Your Paperwork
Finally, take a moment to review your registration, insurance, and boating safety requirements.
Ensuring your paperwork is up to date will help you avoid any hiccups once you’re back on the water!
By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared for a successful 2025 boating season.
We look forward to seeing you on the water!
